Tear Trough

The tear trough refers to the area between the lower eyelid and the upper cheek. As we age, this region can become more hollow and lose its youthful vibrancy. These changes often result in the appearance of under-eye bags, a sunken look, and noticeable dark shadows, making the face appear tired and aged.

As the hollows beneath the eyes deepen with age, they can contribute to a fatigued appearance. Tear trough filler is a non-surgical solution designed to address these concerns by adding subtle volume. A lightweight dermal filler is gently injected beneath the eyes, smoothing out the hollow areas and reducing the appearance of dark circles. This results in a more refreshed and youthful look.

The procedure is performed using a micro-cannula, a small, flexible tube, rather than needles, which ensures enhanced safety and minimizes discomfort during treatment.

Because the under-eye region involves a complex interaction of muscles, ligaments, and fat pads, it’s important to consult with a specialist before undergoing this treatment to ensure it’s the right solution for your specific needs.

Treatment Overview

The treatment takes only 30 minutes, with costs starting at £495 for a single session, and delivers results that can last between 6 to 9 months. One of the key advantages is the minimal downtime, allowing you to return to your normal routine, including work, on the same day. While you may experience some mild swelling or discomfort for up to three days, you’ll begin to see improvements immediately, with the final, enhanced results becoming most noticeable around 10 days post-treatment.

What Are Derma Fillers?

Dermal fillers are composed of hyaluronic acid (HA), a naturally occurring substance in the body, found in various tissues. Most HA fillers used today are derived from bacterial sources and are widely popular in the cosmetic industry. These fillers work by hydrating and adding volume to the skin, creating a smoother, more youthful appearance. The product itself is a soft, injectable gel made from stabilised, non-animal hyaluronic acid. Thanks to its hydrophilic properties, HA attracts water to the skin’s layers, enhancing skin firmness and elasticity. Although dermal fillers are not permanent, they offer long-lasting results. A single treatment can deliver immediate improvements, with effects that last between 9 and 18 months. Dermal fillers are versatile and can be used to restore lost facial volume, smooth fine lines and wrinkles, plump the lips, and contour areas like the cheeks and chin for a more defined look.

Are Derma Fillers Safe

When performed by a qualified professional, dermal filler treatments are highly safe. At SkinSense, we exclusively use products with a well-established safety record. Since hyaluronic acid (HA) is a substance naturally present in the skin, the risk of adverse reactions is minimal, and no prior skin testing is required. These fillers are suitable for individuals with food allergies as well. Our dermal fillers are used in over 90 countries and have been trusted for cosmetic injections for more than 20 years, backed by a strong safety history. Additionally, if needed, hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved using an antidote called hyaluronidase.

What are the side effects

Dermal fillers have evolved significantly since the early days of collagen injections. Modern techniques, such as using advanced injection methods and a micro-cannula (a blunt needle), combined with improved product safety, have greatly reduced the risk of side effects. However, some potential reactions can still occur, including: Injection Reactions: These may include temporary redness at the injection site immediately after treatment. Bruising: Bruising can sometimes happen, though the use of a micro-cannula significantly reduces this risk. Contour Irregularities: Occasionally, lumps or unevenness may appear, but these can usually be smoothed out with gentle massage. If the issue persists, the filler can be easily dissolved. Infection: Like all injections, there is a small risk of infection. However, sterile syringes are used, and strict safety protocols are followed to minimize this risk. Tissue Necrosis: A rare but serious complication, tissue necrosis can occur if filler is accidentally injected into a blood vessel, blocking the blood supply. Fortunately, this is extremely uncommon. Blindness: Although exceedingly rare, there have been around 100 reported cases globally where dermal filler was injected into a blood vessel linked to the artery supplying the eye, causing blindness. Unfortunately, no effective treatment has been developed for this complication yet. Despite these potential risks, dermal fillers are considered safe when administered by experienced professionals following proper protocols.

Where can Dermal Fillers be Used

Facial aging is a complex process that impacts bones, muscles, fat, and skin, influenced by both external factors (like sun exposure and smoking) and internal factors (such as genetics). Over time, the effects of gravity contribute to skin sagging, reduced production of natural hyaluronic acid and collagen, fat tissue loss or redistribution, and bone resorption. Dermal fillers are commonly used to reverse these signs of aging by strategically restoring lost volume based on the specific facial areas affected. For instance, the superficial and deep fat pads in the face gradually diminish and shift relative to one another. This can lead to volume loss in the upper face, particularly in the cheeks, resulting in a sunken appearance. Hyaluronic acid fillers are used to restore fullness in the cheeks, giving the face a more youthful, lifted look. Aging also leads to collagen and elastin depletion, causing the lips to thin over time. Lip volume can be effectively replenished with hyaluronic acid fillers, which rejuvenate and refresh the appearance of the lips. Bone loss is another significant aspect of facial aging. The gradual breakdown of the jawbone, for example, can lead to a receding chin and a less defined jawline. By injecting hyaluronic acid filler into the chin and jawline, these areas can be enhanced, creating a more structured and youthful facial contour. Additionally, hyaluronic acid fillers can be used to refine the shape of the nose, providing subtle contouring without surgery. Beyond the face, HA fillers are also effective in restoring volume to other areas of the body, such as the hands, helping to combat signs of aging and give a more rejuvenated appearance.

What does it entail, will it be painful?

Most basic dermal filler treatments typically don't require additional anesthesia, as the fillers themselves contain a local anesthetic. The procedure is simple and involves a few small injections directly into the skin, usually taking between 15 to 30 minutes. Results are immediately noticeable, providing instant enhancement. For long-lasting effects, periodic treatments are recommended to maintain optimal results. The specific technique used can vary depending on the individual, the extent of volume loss, and the type of dermal filler being applied.

7

When will I see results, and how long will it last?

The results of the treatment are noticeable immediately, but they continue to improve over the following 2 to 4 weeks. While the effects can last between 9 to 18 months, maintaining optimal results over time typically requires periodic follow-up treatments. The longevity of dermal fillers varies depending on the individual, the extent of volume loss, and the specific type of filler used. Each person's needs and response to the treatment will influence how long the results last.

How should I care for the area I have treated?

After your treatment, we will provide you with detailed aftercare instructions to help you maximize the benefits of your treatment and minimize the risk of any side effects. Dermal fillers typically involve minimal downtime, allowing you to resume your regular activities immediately. However, following a few simple guidelines can ensure optimal results: Avoid certain skincare products: For the next three days, steer clear of skincare products containing retinol, vitamin C, Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs), and Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHAs). Take a makeup break: Refrain from wearing makeup for at least 12 hours after your treatment. Be gentle with your skin: Avoid rubbing or scrubbing your face for 24 hours. Limit sun exposure: Stay out of direct sunlight, avoid sunbathing and sunbeds for 24 hours. Skip the pool: Avoid swimming for 24 hours following the treatment. Hold off on intense exercise: Refrain from vigorous physical activity for 24 hours. Limit alcohol intake: Try to minimize alcohol consumption during the first 24 hours. Stay upright: Remain in an upright position for 4 to 6 hours post-treatment to prevent the filler from shifting to unintended areas. Sleep on your back: To avoid placing pressure on the treated area, sleep on your back. Hyaluronic acid filler is a gel that can be compressed or distorted under pressure, potentially affecting the results. Following these instructions will help you achieve the best possible outcome from your dermal filler treatment.
